{"id":968,"date":"2011-08-03T21:50:17","date_gmt":"2011-08-03T21:50:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/?p=968"},"modified":"2021-02-01T13:25:04","modified_gmt":"2021-02-01T13:25:04","slug":"ab41-dettagliare-senza-fotoincisioni-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/en\/ab41-dettagliare-senza-fotoincisioni-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Detailing a vehicle without photoetched set: Autoblindo AB41"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more-->Well, <strong>this is wrong<\/strong> and thru this article I&#8217;ll try to demonstrate that with a little of patience and manuality <strong>it&#8217;s possible to superdetail a plastic model without photoetched parts<\/strong> and to take even more satisfaction.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Kit analysis and building strategy<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-980 aligncenter\" title=\"no_photoetched01\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched01.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched01-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched01-424x282.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I chose an Italeri&#8217;s kit, nr. 6442 \u2013 Autoblindo italiano AB 41 in 1\/35 scale, but what I&#8217;m going to say is valid for every kit.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, we have to take as many photografic references as possible about the vehicle we&#8217;re going to build, by referring to Internet, friends and publications; this is an essential step because the more references we have, the easier the reproduction of details will be.<\/p>\n<p>I only surrendered to the aftermarket to buy the necessary turret of Royal Model (which can be furtherly improved, by the way) and the &#8220;Libia&#8221;-type wheels.<\/p>\n<p>As a matter of fact, <strong>I decided to detail my model kit without using photoetched sets, by building in scratch all the wrong parts of the kit<\/strong> or by building those which are essential to obtain the late version of the vehicle, as in my project.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Matherials and tecniques in detailing<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;ll go over the standard assembling sequence to concentrate the attention on my detailing tecniques and materials I need to reach the result.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Reworking kit parts<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is my usual practice during assembling steps: <strong>reduce the thin<\/strong> of armour plates and similiar details is important to give a realistic shape to the model; to make this I use <strong>cutter<\/strong>, <strong>rasps in various shape and quality<\/strong> (from handcare tools to modelling tools), <strong>sandpaper<\/strong>, always with an eye to collected references.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-990 aligncenter\" title=\"no_photoetched06\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched06.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched06.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched06-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched06-424x282.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Y shape support of antenna<\/strong> of our AB41 is an emblematic case: for easily reworking and make it thin I decided to remove it from base and using raspes I removed the exceeding part. During this practice is necessary to watch the photographic references. A little tip: to support my references and using as guideline I downloaded from the web some instruction guides of photoetched sets from some of manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>Also <strong>the armoured covers of the front lights<\/strong> can become better sanding the exceeding plastic from each side to make it thin. The upper section of the ports was also detailed with some little plasticard parts to simulate the <strong>supports of the hinge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Another exemple of reworking kit parts is <strong>the new plate for fixing spare wheels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-991 aligncenter\" title=\"no_photoetched07\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched07.jpg\" alt=\"Realizzare il supporto della ruota di scorta\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched07.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched07-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched07-424x282.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Using nipper, cutter and rasps I removed the external part of the spare wheel and detailed the rest of the plate with plasticard. In the horns, for exemple, I softly brushed the inside with fluid plastic glue to make them soft again. Make it with careful because it&#8217;s easy to damage the fine details around.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Plasticard<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Laminated and extrused in different shape, this is is the essential material for modellers who begin the practice of detailing and scratch building.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-998\" title=\"no_photoetched14\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched14.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched14-350x234.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched14-424x282.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I employed often sprue parts, cool and warm reworked. The new exaust silencer had to reworked from a side to obtain a single tube. The terminal tube is from a sprue warm worked. It was detailed with welded stripes obtained from a wire of sprue glued with fluid plastic glue. All of this is cheap and realistic.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1021\" title=\"no_photoetched27\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched27.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched27.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched27-350x234.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched27-424x282.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I built in scratch <strong>six hand stoppers<\/strong> for lock on inspection ports on engine roof using sections of sprue warm worked and small sections of plarticard rods drilled, than glued with fluid glue.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Little metal tubes, plastic rods &amp; metal wires.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Building the antenna<\/strong> in scratch give me the opportunity to describe this kind of materials: the main antenna was replaced with <strong>plastic rod<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-987\" title=\"no_photoetched03\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched03.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched03-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched03-424x282.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The base<\/strong> is nothing than a section of sprue detailed with small parts of plasticard.The final part in star shape, was&nbsp; made starting a thin disk of plasticard on wich were fixed six arms as rays of exagon&nbsp; combining in telescopic way a section of&nbsp; <strong>syringe needle and copper wire<\/strong>. All strongly fixed with cyanoacrilate. To set stopped the parts during the composition of the star antenna <strong>I fixed the arms on an adesive paper film<\/strong> during the application of cyanoacrilate glue. It could be difficult but is easy and very realistic result.<\/p>\n<p>Another typical use of&nbsp;syringe needle is <strong>the replacement of light armament<\/strong> for the vehicle defence: in this case <strong>the rear machinegun Breda 38 cal. 8 mm recived a new gun<\/strong> obtained from an appropriate <strong>syringe needle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-989\" title=\"no_photoetched05\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched05.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched05.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched05-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched05-424x282.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After removing the kit part, make a drill on the mantlet and fix the needle section in perfect axis. Before fixing the machinegun on hull plate remember to <strong>drill the mantlet in the pointer position<\/strong>. A little but often forgotten detail.<\/p>\n<p>The main gun, <strong>the light gun Breda 35 cal. 20 mm, <\/strong> was also replaced with a copper tube, making better the realism of the resin turret.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The copper wire<\/strong> is another material largerly used in detailing plastic modelkits: was just used in replacing antenna arms but is wonderful in replace <strong>handle<\/strong>, <strong>hooks, rings<\/strong>, etc.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1025\" title=\"no_photoetched28\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched28.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched28.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched28-350x234.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched28-424x282.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I replaced <strong>the <span id=\"result_box\" class=\"short_text\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\" title=\"Fai clic per visualizzare le traduzioni alternative\">running board<\/span><\/span><\/strong> under side access ports or <strong>power cables on rear lights or on <span class=\"fbPhotoCaptionText\">smoke bomb rack<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Thin plate<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Another useful material is the thin plate, <\/strong>buying in fine art shop.<\/p>\n<p>Details like <strong>dropstoppers<\/strong> over side access ports and visors are often welded with the armoured plates of the kit. It&#8217;s necessary <strong>remove them with careful<\/strong> and make perfectly clean the area before replace them. The work is very delicate becouse is easy damage useful details. With patience, cutter, rasp and fine sandpaper we remove the wrong detail and make a new dropstopper with thin plate; <strong>we build a new little &#8220;L&#8221; shape profile bended in a large &#8220;U&#8221; shape <\/strong> just like the removed ones.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-993\" title=\"no_photoetched09\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched09.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched09-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched09-424x282.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new profile will be fixed with cyanoacrilate using a little glue. I suggest to valuate the real need to replace this kind of details. I decided to leave kit parts over visors on front and rear plates; the danger to damage all near details was too high.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thin plate cutted in stripes<\/strong> is very useful to replace <strong>holders for external tools<\/strong> as pick and shovel. <strong>Cutted in shape<\/strong> will replace the showel itself on wich we can <strong>press the fixing nuts<\/strong> and <strong>replacing handle<\/strong> with one made with <strong>plastic rod<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1001\" title=\"no_photoetched17\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched17.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched17-350x234.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/no_photoetched17-424x282.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The combination of thiny <strong>strips of plasticard<\/strong> and <strong>thin plate stripes<\/strong> were used in building <strong>the jerry cans racks <\/strong>in front of the mudguards.<br \/>\nThe thin plate may be used to made complex parts. The result is extremely near to the real one.
