{"id":864,"date":"2011-05-24T20:39:41","date_gmt":"2011-05-24T20:39:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/?p=864"},"modified":"2016-01-06T19:11:04","modified_gmt":"2016-01-06T19:11:04","slug":"invecchiamento-veicoli-militari","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/en\/invecchiamento-veicoli-militari\/","title":{"rendered":"Weathering and dust on military vehicles: the lesson of Joaquin Garcia Gazquez"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During the last edition of the <strong>International Modelling Contest \u201cModellismo, che passione!\u201d<\/strong><strong> organized by CMT of Turin<\/strong>, the Spanish master <strong>Joaquin Garcia Gazquez <\/strong>explained to us how to obtain a realistic weathering effect on the hull of our plastic model.<\/p>\n<p>On this page we\u2019re going to show his particularly technique.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento01\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After painting the base coat of <strong>acrylic colours<\/strong>, khaki and black, Joaquin is ready with new materials: <strong>Humbrol enamens<\/strong> (sand and earth), <strong>oil colours <\/strong>(Sienna natural earth, ochre), some <strong>artistic pigments<\/strong> (sand and ochre) and <strong>Humbrol thinner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento02\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p>First we insert thinner in airbrush and than <strong>enamel colour resumed from bottom of the tinlet<\/strong> without shake. Mix well and <strong>set the pressure to 0.8 bar<\/strong>. We have to cover irregularly small sectors of the model from top to bottom of the surface without covering the base colour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento03\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento04\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento04.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now we <strong>wait 10\/15 minutes<\/strong> to let the colour dry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento05\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento05.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After cleaning airbrush we kept some brushes:<strong> small, large and hard irregular brushes<\/strong> for various actions on the sprayed surface.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento06\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento06.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento08\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento08.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento09\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now we treat the surface <strong>from the top to the bottom with a wet brush with Humbrol thinner<\/strong>. Some part of enamel colour will be removed downwards in stripes (same as the rain effect on dust over a real vehicle). It\u2019s very important to move from the top to the bottom downwards (same as the gravity action on dusted surfaces).<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the moving parts or most frequented by the crew are the cleanest and the most hidden<br \/>\nrecesses are the most dusty. <strong>Logic, common sense and the photographic reference help at this time<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe gentle movement of the brush from top to bottom will produce <strong>streaks of color and help to<\/strong><strong> mitigate the sense of uniformity<\/strong> obtained immediately after the treatment with airbrush.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento10\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We can <strong>airbrush again with the camouflage background colors<\/strong> (black and khaki) over surfaces to reduce the effect of flattening, using <strong>flying masks<\/strong>, in this case a simple business card, that help accentuate the vertical streaks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-896\" title=\"invecchiamento11\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento11.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento11-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento11-424x282.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento12\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It&#8217;s possible to <strong>emphasize the effects of locally dusting<\/strong> on train rolling and fenders using with oil colors and pigments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento13\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The oil paint <strong>will be deposited on a cardboard for packaging<\/strong> to absorb the oily component and to obtain a more opaque and realistic effect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento13b\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento13b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento14\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>First we apply the pigments powder<\/strong>, for example on the horizontal part of the fender, and <strong>then we apply the mixture of the oil colour<\/strong> \u201cTerra di Siena natural \u201d <strong>and Humbrol thinner <\/strong>to fix the powder.<br \/>\nThis procedure makes it possible to <strong>simulate the effect of increased volume of the coat of earth and dust<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento15\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Within minutes the treatment will be dry and very realistic. Meanwhile, we try to <strong>create some other effects such as spots and leakage of fuel<\/strong>. For this we will use again <strong>oil colours<\/strong>, specifically the colour \u201cBitumen\u201d, but at this time without compromising its oily component. Just lay them on the masking tape.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento16\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento16.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The selected part is the area around the fuel fillers. As previously, <strong>we have to dilute the oil colour<\/strong><strong> with Humbrol thinner<\/strong>, reproducing the <strong>drips and leaks with a brush<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento17\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"invecchiamento18\" src=\"http:\/\/www.modellismochepassione.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/invecchiamento18.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This technique is <strong>very simple and
